Features: Task Update
Steelray provides an easy way for team members to send status updates to the project manager with just a few clicks.
The process is accomplished in 2 steps:
Step 1: The Project Manager Prepares the Project File
To prepare the project file for task updates with Steelray, the project manager sets the "Steelray Email" property in the project file:
- The project manager uses Microsoft Project to open the Microsoft Project file.
- Select Properties from the File menu:

- Click on the "Custom Tab", and create a custom property
called "Steelray Email". For the Value, enter the email
address of the project manager. Click on the Add button to create
the property:
- Create another custom property called "Steelray Path". For the value,
enter the full pathname of the project file, e.g.
C:\projects\myproject.mpp
Step 2: Send Task Updates From the Project Viewer
When Steelray opens a project file with the "Steelray Email" property set, it enables the Task Update feature. When the user clicks on a task name, the task detail view will have a third tab: Update Task:

The first time you click on the tab, you'll be prompted to enter a little information about yourself and your email server:

After you answer a question about whether you've begun working on the task, you'll be asked more questions about the status. The questions change depending on how you answered the first question (whether the task has started).

Click the Update Task button, and Steelray sends an email to the project manager.
